Williamson County officials on Thursday charged a man with aggravated assault on a public servant following a chase and an officer-involved shooting that ended near Hutto High School late Tuesday , according to a court document.
Sergio Martinez Ramos , 32 , is accused of leading authorities on a high-speed chase from Taylor to Hutto and trying to run over an officer, according to an arrest affidavit. Officials said five officers from various agencies fired their weapons during the incident, but it was unclear Thursday at what point in the pursuit those shots were fired.
Officer Roy Jordon of the Taylor Police Department stopped Ramos on a report of reckless driving on Tuesday evening , the affidavit said. After initially stopping, Ramos drove away, the document said.
Authorities chased Ramos on Texas 79 to Hutto, where he drove into a parking lot at 635 W. Front St. , near the Hutto High School sports fields where several teams were competing, officials said.
In the parking lot, Jordan, who had gotten out of his patrol vehicle, motioned for Ramos to get out of his vehicle, the affidavit said. Instead, Ramos accelerated toward Jordan, and Jordan fired his weapon, according to the affidavit. Jordan was struck by the vehicle and thrown onto the hood, the affidavit said.
Ramos, who officials said is from Mexico, was struck by at least one of the shots during the chase and was taken to an area hospital, where he remained Thursday evening. He faces up to life in prison on the first-degree felony charge.
Officers from the Hutto and Taylor police departments, a Williamson County constable's office, the Williamson County sheriff's office and the Department of Public Safety were involved in the pursuit, officials said.
Along with Jordan, officials said in a news release that the following officers fired their weapons: Jack Danford of the Williamson County sheriff's office; Stephen Haehnel and Cody Pahl of DPS; and Roy Hart of the Williamson County Pct. 3 constable's office. Information on the officers' employment histories and ranks was not provided Thursday .
Sheriff's office Sgt. John Foster said Tuesday evening that Ramos tried to run over at least one other officer, but that detail was not included in the affidavit.
The sheriff's office on Thursday referred questions to District Attorney John Bradley , who declined to provide further details, including where the shots were fired and whether Ramos had allegedly tried to run over other officers.
"Information regarding the incident will not be released pending any investigation and prosecution," Bradley said in an e-mail. "There likely will be additional charges that may come through the grand jury. But, until an investigation is completed, it would be premature to identify the additional charges."
