Some people have been fired for some pretty crazy things. Some of these outrageous firings were the fault of the employee doing something ridiculous, others were odd employers firing people for strange reasons.
I’ve never been fired from a job, I’ve only ever quit. And not even that many of them, I tended to have staying power for the most part, even at a time when there were more jobs than people to fill them.
It has to make for quite a story though, to say that you’ve been fired for something outrageous, maybe even cause for a lawsuit.
Check out some outrageous firings:
Fired for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie
John Stone, a car salesman in a Chicago suburb claims he was fired for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie to work one day. He wore it for his grandmother. Stone was hired at another dealership after the firing.
I’m not sure I blame them for firing him. That tie should be burned.
Teachers fired for lap dance
During a high school pep rally in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, a math teacher and a gym teacher were fired for inappropriate behavior – one of them gave the other a lap dance during the rally.
Teachers are supposed to be positive examples, and this kind of behavior at a school function is definitely cause for firing, and it’s too bad they couldn’t be prosecuted.
EMT fired for Facebook
An EMT, Dawnmarie Souza, in Connecticut was fired for criticizing her boss on Facebook “Love how the company allows a 17 to become a supervisor“, but the National Labor Relations Board ruled in her favor and filed a complaint against the company. She worked for a company called AMR.
I think it is ridiculous to fire someone because they let off steam like that, but I also think that people need to be held accountable for something they say on a website that can be viewed across the globe and potentially be considered slander. You say stuff like that to your girlfriend on the phone, not post it “publically” on a website.
Burger King employee fired
A Burger King employee and aspiring musician was fired for celebrating his birthday by taking a bath in the fast food restaurant’s sink.
They got it on video.
Clearly not a rocket scientist.
Renee Gork fired
Renee Gork, an Arkansas sports radio personality interviewed College Football Coach Bobby Petrino wearing a Florida Gators hat. Petrino refused to answer her questions while she was wearing the hat, and allegedly it was the reason for her firing although her employer denies it.
Personally I think it’s obnoxious to wear a competing teams hat during an interview.
Coach Woody Hayes fired
Woody Hayes, the legendary football coach from Ohio State was fired for punching a player. He still managed to make it into the College Football Hall of Fame.
David Steward fired
David Steward, a casino worker in Iowa was fired for posting a Dilbert cartoon that made fun of managers by calling them “drunken lemurs” on a bulletin board in the casino office. The judge sided with Steward calling it “a good-faith error in judgment” but it didn’t matter, the casino closed not long after.
John Toomey fired from Macy’s
John Toomey, a long-time Santa Claus at Macy’s in San Francisco (20 years) was fired for telling a “naughty” or “off-color” joke to an elderly couple that chose to sit on his knee. Santa wasn’t without a job for long, a local restaurant hired him and agreed to pay him more than he was making at Macy’s.
Edward Greenwood IX fired
Edward Greenwood IX was a government employee who was fired by the Mayor of New York for playing solitaire on the job.
Hooksett employees fired
Four town workers in Hooksett, NH were fired for gossiping.
Joseph Casias fired
Joseph Casias, a Wal-Mart employee in Michigan, was undergoing treatment for an inoperable brain tumor and cancer but was fired for his use of medical marijuana even though he was named Associate of the Year. The ACLU is suing Wal-Mart on Casias’s behalf.
