The discovery period for a lawsuit against U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, R-8th, for alleged nonpayment of campaign management services was extended to Feb. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court.

Attorneys representing both parties indicated Wednesday that a settlement is being negotiated.

Walsh, of Johnsburg, is being sued by Morton Grove-based Patrickson-Hirsch Associates, which alleges he did not pay the company $20,000 for campaign management services provided by Keith Liscio, a principal with the company who had a 15-year business relationship with Walsh. The alleged nonpayment occurred in fall 2009 when Walsh was just launching his primary election campaign.

Walsh defeated incumbent Democrat Melissa Bean in November to win the 8th District seat.

Walsh's attorney, Daniel Kinsella, and Patrickson-Hirsch attorney Sheldon Perl, met behind closed doors for 25 minutes prior to appearing before Judge Roger Fein on Wednesday.

The lawsuit was filed on Jan. 21, 2010, just prior to the February 2010 primary election in which Walsh defeated five other GOP candidates on his way to challenging and defeating Bean.

According to the original complaint filed in January 2010, Walsh entered into an oral contract with Patrickson-Hirsch on Sept. 1, 2009 for Liscio to provide campaign management services for a fee of $5,000 to be billed twice per month. The document states that Walsh failed to pay bills beginning on Oct. 15, 2009 and Patrickson-Hirsch resigned on Dec. 4, 2009 and is still owed $20,000.
