Q. What are your views on the U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq? Should the U.S. change the focus of its anti-terrorism campaign?

A. The U.S. military has done an outstanding job in both Iraq and Afghanistan despite early strategic setbacks. In Iraq President Bush implemented a “surge” strategy that proved to be wildly successful. The same sort of strategy is being requested for the effort in Afghanistan and we are currently awaiting the President’s decision. I believe that the commanders in the field are in the best position to formulate and execute this strategy and I hope that President Obama offers General McChrystal the troops he needs to achieve his objectives in Afghanistan. As a member of Congress, I would vote to fund such a request.
