A Better Way to Vote
To the Editor:
Re “How to Turn Off Voters” (editorial, Dec. 15): As the nation’s largest nonpartisan voter protection coalition, Election Protection supports the call for modernizing New York State’s elections. A few reforms can make the democratic process far more inclusive.
Consistent with the majority of states, New York should allow early and no-excuse absentee voting. Single-day elections unnecessarily restrict the ability of all who may want to vote from doing so, strain the system and cause long lines at polling places.
Many eligible voters cannot risk missing work to vote, and, as we observed with the problems on Election Day, cannot rely on being able to vote before work despite planning ahead.
Also, registration deadlines disenfranchise those who move frequently, including students and low-income individuals. Same-day registration will ensure that voting better represents the diverse communities of New York.
Although there will never be an Election Day without difficulties and hurdles, we can improve the system.
