From 1977: Here's what Saylorville Lake looked like before it was Saylorville Lake. This photo, gram April 8, 1977, shows the Des Moines River flowing through a straight, narrow channel near the current Saylorville Dam. The following week, gates closed and water began backing into the permanent pool behind the earthen dam.
