It was a rough couple of basketball games last week for the Reedsport Braves. One was a near-win, and the other a near-total blowout.

The game in Myrtle Point was very close and hard-fought throughout. It was tied at six points apiece at the end of the first quarter, and the Braves topped the Bobcats by one point at the half.

With 30 seconds left to go in the game, the score was once again tied, at 47-47. That’s when Myrtle Point got the ball. They held onto it until the last few seconds, and then tried for a 3-point bucket. They missed.

In overtime, the Bobcats scored five points, including one from beyond the arc, while keeping the Braves away from the basket. The game went to Myrtle Point, 52-47.

In addition to some pretty good defense and a lot of 3-pointers, coach James Hixenbaugh said, “We hit 50 percent from the free throw line, so that was great. And we only had 18 turnovers.”

Hannes Zetzsche “was just on fire” that night, the coach reported. The 6-2 junior led the scoring with 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Jason Fegles landed three 3-pointers, to add 12 points to the game. James Hixenbaugh Jr. and Tyler Strowbridge contributed four points each.

Coquille game

At least 35 turnovers marred Reedsport’s performance in Coquille Friday evening. The pounding by the Red Devils was so relentless that the Braves found themselves down 47-9 at the half.

“It’s the way our season’s been going,” Hixenbaugh said. “It was rough.”

In the locker room at halftime, he said, “We talked about doing better defense in the third quarter.”

The strategy worked. The Braves held the Red Devils to 13 points.

The team “played OK,” Hixenbaugh said, but “Coquille’s just a lot better than we are. It’s hard to play against a team that’s that good.”

Two Reedsport players scored five points apiece ” Hixenbaugh and Frame, who contributed the Braves’ only 3-point shot of the game.

Bandon Friday

The Braves are now 1-16 on the season and 0-8 in the Sunset Hybrid League. They host the 9-7 Bandon Tigers Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Bandon beat Reedsport by 36 points last time.

“We look at how much we lost by the last time we played them and just hope we can cut it down a little bit,” Hixenbaugh said.

The team travels to Glide on Tuesday, Feb. 1, for their final matchup with the powerful Wildcats, who will be looking to extend their 10-game winning streak.
