After two more losses last week, the Reedsport girls have dropped to 3-12 on their basketball season and 0-8 in the Sunset Hybrid League.

“But we’re continuing to improve a little each week,” coach Stuart Richardson said. “We’re still working on our dribbling ... our ball handling is getting better, but it takes time.”

Myrtle Point was a tough team to contend with, Richardson said, but Coquille was super tough. The Lady Braves fell to the Bobcats last Tuesday 42-25, and then to the Red Devils on Friday, 74-17.

“In Myrtle Point, we played better that game,” Richardson said. “We’re doing good playing the smaller 3A schools, but not so good against powerhouses like Coquille. We’re improving. Myrtle Point beat us by 17, and that’s a big improvement over the last time we played them.”

Just two weeks earlier, the Lady Braves lost to Myrtle Point by 33 points, he pointed out, so Reedsport was able to cut the point spread in half this time. Richardson said he is fairly sure his team can post a win next Friday, Feb. 4, when Reedsport hosts Myrtle Point in their next-to-last home game of the season.

Coquille game

The loss was more painful Friday night in Coquille when the girls went down by 57 points to a very aggressive team of talented players.

“Coquille is a veteran team, it’s hard for our girls to handle the pressure,” Richardson said. “It’s going to take some time to rebuild our program, but we’re getting there.”

The Red Devils only allowed 17 points by the Lady Braves, while putting up 74 points of their own.

This week

Reedsport hosts Bandon on Friday with 4:30 p.m. junior varsity games, followed by the girls varsity at 6 p.m. and the boys around 7:30 p.m.

“Bandon is a winnable game for us,” Richardson said. “I think if people will come to watch the game, they might see us get a win this time.”
