Does Reedsport need a warming shelter?

Saturday, January 29, 2011 \

People interested in helping the homeless and transient population of Reedsport are invited to attend a meeting on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Covenant United Methodist Church.

“The purpose of the meeting is to decide whether there is a need for a warming shelter in Reedsport,” said Methodist Pastor Jim Ives. “If so, how do we go about setting one up?”

Topics to be discussed at the meeting include:

- How many the warming shelter will serve

- Where it will be located

- How it will be paid for

- If a kitchen is required

- Whether licensing would be required

- What kind of security will be needed

- What kind of staff it will take

- Whether it should be a nonprofit 501(c)(3)

Several speakers will be on hand to address these and other issues inherent in creating a warming shelter. They include Doug Bales, manager of four Eagan Warming Centers in Eugene, Reedsport Police Chief Mark Fandrey, and Grace Moore from the Department of Human Resources in Roseburg, who recently conducted a survey of homeless people in Douglas County.
