Streator City Manager Paul Nicholson said Thursday the city has hired a contractor to remove snow in front of businesses on Main Street.

However, the businesses must make sure the snow is pushed into the parking lane by 4 p.m. Thursday, or it will not be removed. A parking ban remains in effect on Main, Bloomington and Park streets until 7 a.m. Friday.

Nicholson said the city is acquiring equipment to clear the main school walking routes to Northlawn Junior High School and Streator Township High School.

Nicholson said plowing city streets continues and by 3 p.m. Thursday all alleys should be clear. He said some secondary roads still have one lane plowed and crews are continuing to work through those.

"(Clearing the secondary roads) is taking longer due to the volume and weight of the snow," Nicholson said.
